That was quick

That three days went quickly! Observe the time on this post. Though I am not a morning person, I am up and dressed and ready to leave for the hospital. I’m guessing I’ll be back home (and online) tomorrow or Sunday.

Think happy thoughts for me, y’all.

Three more days

I’m preoccupied by my upcoming surgery. It’s this Friday. I’m not really nervous, it’s just kind of a big thing. My family practitioner said last week that it’s kind of a big deal and he’d be surprised if I can come home the same day. The gyno asked during my last appointment if I maybe wanted a morphine pump after. (What kind of stupid question is that? Of COURSE I want a morphine pump after!)

I bet it’s going to hurt. And I’m a wimp.

One Two Punch

I had a really bad day on Sunday, and it kicked me into a depressive episode. While down in the depress-y muck, not sure how I got there (no med problems…) or how to get out of it, I started my period. A whole week earlier than I expected, not because it was early, but because I can’t count.

I think my mental health (which is much better now, thank you) is in a state that I can only take one hit at a time. Probably because I’m still mourning Peggy, and I think that has my resistance down. PMS is one hit. I can handle one hit. But a 2nd hit? Knocks me down flat.

Dear Hairy Thunderer of the Old Testament who Smites People when they Practice Birth Control or Touch the Ark of the Covenant:

If you could try to limit the hits to one at a time, I’d be very grateful.

Sincerely,

Ann, who has one hit in process now…

Blogs I Read

Ever since I put an RSS feed on my iGoogle page, I rarely click visit the sites of the blogs I read. I just “read with the feed.” The upside is greater speed and efficiency. The downside is that I rarely comment on people’s blogs any more.

Here are the blogs I read every new post on:

  • Behind the Infamous Veil - BIV’s personal blog is on hiatus for safety reasons.
  • Brain Barf - Keri is an ex-mo friend in Eastern Washington whose rare posts read like a brilliant stream of consciousness riff using words instead of a guitar.
  • Joe in and Around Las Vegas - Vegas Joe is a programmer, gardener, and handy fellow who takes lots of pictures and writes really interesting stuff about parts of Vegas tourists don’t see.
  • Joy in the Journey - Hope is a Fringe-y friend whose journal/blog recounts her day-to-day life. Best part is her “happy today for” daily comment.
  • Michael Homan - Michael is on the faculty at Xavier. Our youngest children were in the same pre-school for a year. Michael’s house was destroyed by Katrina, and he is very active and engaged in rebuilding New Orleans right along with his own life. I stumbled on his blog by accident, and he doesn’t know me from Adam.
  • Open Vein - Caroline is an ex-mo friend and wonderful writer who has excellent insights into feminism. She doesn’t write much, either.
  • PsyRel - Michael Nielsen’s posts and announcements about the study of the psychology of religion, which subject he studies and teaches at Georgia Southern University.
  • Puddle of Nothing - Randy’s blog. Randy is my very dear friend. He blogs about movies, television, dreams, and his two sons, A and T.
  • Stephen M (Ethesis) - Stephen is a Mormon who blogs with perception, gratitude and candor about life after grief.
  • the adventures of - very few posts from a lovely red-head ex-Mormon woman friend graduating from a big school in the desert very soon.
  • trail seeker - Alan is a farmer who lives in the PNW and loves to hike. He stopped writing ages ago, but I can always hope!
  • Wry catcher - brilliant feminist ex-mo buddy
  • Gardner family - fun musical friends here in town

In addition to these “people blogs,” I also have in a feed: Pound (Wendy McClure’s blog), I Blame the Patriarchy (radical feminism at it’s cutting-through-the-crap best) and NO Notes, a New Orleans/Saint James Infirmary Blues blog by Rob Walker, who wrote the amazing little book Letters from New Orleans. If you don’t own it, you should buy it.

So, if you are writing posts, but wonder why I don’t say anything, it’s not because I’m not reading, or because you aren’t interesting. It’s because I’m reading you efficiently. Furthermore, I’ve discovered that I really needn’t comment on everything, and the world still spins just fine without my editorializing.

I am thinking of adding a blogroll. If you want to be on it, just let me know.

Exciting elective non-cosmetic surgery

Lynda asked about my upcoming exciting elective non-cosmetic surgery. This will be TMI for most of you.

1. Probably as a result of obesity and two 9+ lb. babies, my pelvic organs have prolapsed. I’m having my uterus, bladder and rectum put back where they belong. I am fairly young and reasonably healthy, so I want to do this now, rather than wait 20 years for it to be really problematic, but not be in good enough health to do anything about it.

2. As I make my way through that magical time of life known as “perimenopause,” my periods have become downright messy. There is usually a 36 hour period (heh) during the seven days of my cycle where I bleed so heavily that it is risky to leave home. I’m having my endometrium cauterized, which should dramatically reduce the bleeding and may stop it entirely.

I did feel the need to use the phrase “non-cosmetic.” I’m in my late 40’s, and none too happy about what is happening to my face. I have wrinkles. And jowls. Sometimes I pull my skin up and back lightly to see what a facelift would do. I would look younger, but also kind of…plastic. Better a real face that looks like it’s lived a real life than a plastic looking one. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

Love Tag

From Angie. Fun little meme!

LOVE TAG

What is your husband’s name? Calvin
How long have you been together? 10 1/2 years
How long did you date? 8 months
Who eats more? It’s a tie.
Who said I love you first? I signed an e-mail “Love, Ann.” He replied with “I love you.”
Who is taller? Calvin
Who has more speeding tickets? Probably me, though neither of us has had a ticket in a long time.
Who is smarter? I would say me, because I married Calvin :), but he married me.
Who is more sensitive? I dunno. Probably Calvin, because he would know and I don’t.
Who does the laundry? Calvin moves the laundry in and out of the machines, I fold and put away.
Who does the dishes? I empty the dishwasher and try to keep dishes loaded during the day. Calvin does the dinner dishes, finishes up in the kitchen and gets the dishwasher running. I have been slacking the last few weeks.
Who sleeps on the right? Calvin
Who pays the bills? Calvin
Who mows the lawn? Calvin
Who cooks dinner? Usually me.
Who drives when you are together? Calvin.
Who is more stubborn? Me.
Who kissed whom first? Calvin did. We had discussed it first by e-mail first, though. I told him I had no sense of when it would be suitable, so if he thought the time was right to go for it. It was on our first real “date.”
Who asked who out first? Our first meeting was on neutral territory. Our first date was a big football day (New Year’s Day). I don’t know if it was so much asking out as making arrangements. When you’re courting by e-mail, the first big step is talking in real life. He suggested that.
Who proposed? Calvin did, but I kind of made an ultimatum of it. I told him that we needed to decide if we were going to get married, and if we were, no sense waiting around, and if we weren’t, then we should just break up because why prolong the process? He proposed Mother’s Day weekend, 2007; probably about two weeks later.
Who has more siblings? I do. I have three brothers; Calvin has two (one living).

I don’t have anybody to tag :(

I’m feeling spread a little thin

I feel bad about complaining, because compared to poor Hope, I am in fine, fine shape. But I am so stressed, and tired. I’m not eating properly. Three bowls of Cheerios and a banana before 8:00 p.m. is not a healthy lifestyle.

Tomorrow I’m doing MD stuff all day in preparation for some exciting elective non-cosmetic surgery at the end of the month. Wednesday is my busiest day of the week, with work followed by piano lessons and then cub scouts. Somewhere in there I’ve got to work in buying valentine’s for the kid for his party on Thursday.

Ticket

The boss doesn’t want to go see…the Boss. I changed my flight for my next trip to Ohio so we could go, but since he’s not interested, I looked at what I could get from the legitimate sources. I was able to get a really good seat (front row, club level) for normal face value - $89 plus about $20 in Ticketmaster fees and such. I guess it’s because I only wanted one ticket.

On March 24th, 2008, I will attend my eighth Bruce Springsteen concert.

Away from Home

I have been working in the main office this week, and staying with the parents. The Kid came with me. We flew on Skybus, a new airline based in Columbus. It flies non-stop from Gulfport, which is awesome. It’s also CHEAP. The only real downside was the very, very late departure time (for an eight year-old) and the sales pitches during the flight. I paid extra for priority boarding, so we got on early, got good seats in the front, and The Kid slept for most of the flight.

He had a lot of ear pain during landing. We are going to take hard candies and gum and hope for the best on the return flight.

It’s been hard to get writing done. The kid goes to bed early, and the computer is in his room. I brought the laptop with me, but I leave it at the office during the week. It’s with me now, though, so I’m catching up.

On a personal note

Dear teen-aged girl who stole the really cool stuffed animal my little boy caught at the Mardi Gras parade:

There are many, many bad words I could say, but I will refrain because this is a family friendly blog. However, I am willing to believe in Hell just so you can burn there.
