Arrivederci, Luciano

I’m not an opera buff. I do love music, though. And I think I am as able as anyone of recognizing genius. Pavarotti was a genius.

I’ve been listening to some of his music over on NPR. Although Pavarotti’s voice had deteriorated over the last few years his very existence brought a kind of bright light to us - look what humans can produce! His version of Nessun Dorma gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. I just listened to O Sole Mio and Vesti la Giubba (the aria from Pagliacci) and they’re stunning. The Three Tenors versions of La Donna e Mobile and Libiamo are fun and brilliant.

What a gift. Favorite facts: he sold insurance as a young man to pay for music lessons, and he really, really wanted to be a soccer player.

it was so crazy! right before i went to bed they were talking about it hitting galveston and showing the shore and big waves, and people leaving the island, and then an hour later we had only gotten sprinkles, and I went to bed. When I woke up the next day it was barely cloudy and in teh low 80s, a perfect day.

i still get so nervous. I’m sure you do too! i need to move away from the coast.
